Honouring Culture, Healing, and Hope Through Sacred Art
The Diocese of New Ulm is preparing for a significant moment in its history: the rededication of the diocese to the Blessed Virgin Mary under the local and deeply meaningful title, Our Lady of the Prairie. Set to take place on June 22, 2025, at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, the event will mark the official unveiling of a new, nearly life-sized painting by Damien Walker of the Studio of Saint Philomena.
This sacred commission began after Bishop Chad Zielinski, newly appointed in 2022, was inspired by the rolling prairie landscapes and the people he met during his visits to every corner of the diocese. His desire to honour Mary in a way that reflected local culture, history, and hope led him to connect with our studio in Rangiora, New Zealand.
Damien visited Minnesota in 2024 to research the history and cultural fabric of the diocese. His time included visits to historical sites and museums, learning deeply from the people and places that form the heart of New Ulm. What resulted is not only a beautiful work of sacred art, but a symbol of healing, unity, and spiritual renewal for the diocese.

The painting, developed through the traditional glaze-layering method used by Renaissance masters, reflects both Native American and Western European heritage. As Bishop Zielinski noted, this sacred image invites “an encounter with Christ that is sacred,” drawing the faithful into reflection, prayer, and connection.
A diocesan pilgrimage is also planned to accompany the unveiling, with young adults walking nearly 90 miles across various parishes and communities. Damien hopes to be present, joining others in celebrating the deep Marian devotion that binds this journey together.
We’re honoured to have played a part in this important moment for the Diocese of New Ulm. The image of Our Lady of the Prairie stands as a testament to the unifying power of sacred art rooted in place, and reaching toward eternity.
