Damien Walker Shares the Story Behind the Painting
During a recent visit to the Diocese of New Ulm, Damien Walker, founder of The Studio of Saint Philomena, shared the story behind the creation of Our Lady of the Prairie, a sacred image commissioned by Bishop Chad Zielinski.
In this special talk, Damien walks viewers through the symbolism, prayer process, and artistic choices behind the painting. From his initial visit to Minnesota, where he immersed himself in the land and history of the diocese, to the slow, prayerful layering of glazes inspired by Renaissance techniques, this talk invites viewers to see Our Lady of the Prairie not just as art, but as an encounter.
Damien reflects on the balance of gentleness and strength in Mary’s expression, the theological meaning behind her posture and colors, and how the work draws from both Western European and Native American heritage. He also shares the personal experience of creating a painting that has since inspired a diocese-wide pilgrimage and rededication to Mary.
If you’re curious about the meaning behind the artwork, the process of sacred painting, or simply want to spend time reflecting on the beauty of this new Marian image, we invite you to watch the full talk below.
